Spurs fans may well have been excited when they signed Doherty last summer as he was arriving from Wolves having established himself as one of the best attacking defenders in the Premier League having racked up eight goals and eight assists as a wing-back during his time in the top flight.

It hasn’t turned out like that though as under four different managers he’s only been handed 13 league starts, but that has not stopped him from being called up to the Republic of Ireland squad and his performance against Portugal may have highlighted why he’s not been dropped.
The wing-back was up against Cristiano Ronaldo on Thursday evening but he helped his side pick up a 0-0 draw and his heat map highlights how important Doherty was as he was up and down the right-hand side all night.

The 29-year old almost saw himself become a hero in Dublin as he scored in second-half added time, only for the referee to rule out the goal as Will Keane apparently fouled former Wolves keeper Rui Patricio, so the fact he was in the middle of the box that late on highlights his attacking mindset.
