The Sun’s Tom Barclay believes West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone could be an exciting signing for Southampton.

Johnstone has been linked with a move to Southampton, with Barclay’s newspaper just one outlet to report on the Saints’ interest in the 28-year-old.

With less than a year to run on his contract and after the performances he put in during West Brom’s recent stint in the Premier League, Johnstone is no doubt an attractive proposition for top-flight sides.

During the 2020/21 campaign, the England international made 166 saves, more than any other goalkeeper in the division.

On paper, Barclay believes he could be an exciting signing for Southampton, though the football reporter acknowledges that things, of course, do not always work out.

“On paper at least, it looks like a very exciting signing,” Barclay said to TIF. “But we’ve said that before with other goalkeepers where it hasn’t worked out, so no transfer is guaranteed.”

West Brom will not want to lose Johnstone in January, with the club currently fighting for promotion.

However, it could be their last chance to make some money off of the shot-stopper, so perhaps it is something they may consider if Southampton come in with an offer during the winter window.
