Joe Thomlinson has been speaking on the Football Daily YouTube channel about Newcastle United’s decision to appoint Eddie Howe.

The former Bournemouth manager has become the first permanent boss to lead the Magpies under their new ownership and he has been doing a lot of work which was different to how Steve Bruce handled things including training at St James’ Park and he also organised a team bonding exercise last week.

Will Newcastle get relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

No matter what he does off the pitch, the fact that he had been out of the game for a prolonged period of time and that Bournemouth had a terrible defensive record under him in the Premier League could be trouble for the Magpies who have already shipped 24 goals in 11 league matches.

Thomlinson highlighted this poor defensive record and has raised a concern about the appointment.

(13:34) “Our reservation with Eddie Howe, I think at Football Daily was always the defensive units and his coaching of a defensive unit at Bournemouth, I mean that Bournemouth of backline throughout the five seasons in the Prem was one of the worst backlines the Prem has ever seen across that longer period.”

(13:53) “I mean, in terms of goals conceded I’ve got it down here. in the first season he came they conceded 67 which was the 19th best in the league, then he conceded 67 which was the 17th best.

“Then it jumped obviously up to 61 goals conceded which was the 17th, then he conceded 70 which was the 18th and then he conceded 65 which was the 18th. So at Bournemouth, the numbers were worrying, they were troublesome.

“At Newcastle, they’re currently on course to concede 82 goals this season currently, they’ve conceded 24 goals in 11 games at over 2.2 goals per 90.”

TIF Thoughts on Howe at Newcastle…

Newcastle’s new owners will have looked at the precarious position the club finds itself in and may have wanted a manager with both Premier League and top-flight relegation battle experience and that is two things that Howe has from his time with the Cherries.

It’s safe to say that the number of goals Bournemouth conceded under Howe was shocking, however the 43-year old has revealed that during his time out of the game he’s been travelling the world watching other coaches and learning from them, so the Premier League could well see a different and more tactically aware manager this time around, instead of one who is very much attack focussed.
