Newcastle United: Liam Kennedy hints at possible transfer of Mo Salah in the future

|

Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has hinted that the club could seal a sensational transfer for Mohamed Salah at some point in the future.

With Newcastle now under the control of the richest owners in world football, there is no real limit to the kind of player that they can bring into the club, with some outlets having listed some rather incredible possibilities for them ever since the takeover has been in the works.

When taking Financial Fair Play into consideration, the Toon will have a lot of money to spend, with some suggestions that they have a £190m warchest at their disposal for the upcoming January transfer window.

Recent reports in Italy have suggested that a move for Liverpool ace Salah, who won the Premier League’s Golden Boot in 2017/18 and 2018/19, could be on the cards as his contract nears its 2023 expiry.

When Kennedy was asked about the issue on the latest edition of NUFC Matters, while he played down the idea of the Egyptian moving to Tyneside any time soon, he did suggest a move further down the line may yet become a realistic prospect.

He said: “Maybe not Mo Salah, but I’m imagining there will be some kind of flagship, almost cultural, signing. I think that was something talked about 18 months ago when this first started, when this first came to the fore. Mo Salah’s name was mentioned at that time, that’s why I’m laughing.

“So look, I’m not I’m not going to rule anything in or rule anything out with these lot, I’m really not. They’ve come here to win, I think Mo Salah’s out of Newcastle United’s reach in the short term, but in the medium term, I don’t see why not.”

Do NUFC have a real chance of signing Salah?

It is important to note that Salah, who is valued at £90 million (as per Transfermarkt), is approaching the final 18 months of his contract as it expires in 2023, and whilst there have reportedly been negotiations to extend it, the longer that it goes unsigned only increases the chances that Liverpool might need to cash in.

So the timing might actually work out for Eddie Howe’s men, providing that they can stay in the Premier League this season – something that looks very challenging at this point.

PIF and the new owners have stated that they have big ambitions for the club, and if they can make a statement signing such as Salah and bring someone with his immense talent and scoring record on board, then that could really give them a major boost for the next few years.

Obviously, a lot will depend on how the contract talks go at Liverpool, but as Kennedy claims, at this stage, you certainly can’t rule out that it becomes reality at some point over the next few years if the stars align in the right way.
