Newcastle United’s draw at Brighton & Hove Albion certainly got their fans talking, especially when it came to Jonjo Shelvey’s performance.
After a woeful first half, it could only get better for Newcastle in the second half, and get better it did. Isaac Hayden levelled the scores, with Callum Wilson looking destined to wrap up the three points late on. The forward rounded the ‘keeper and had an open net, but Sanchez took him out, and was subsequently sent off by David Coote.
With no substitutions remaining, defender Lewis Dunk went in goal for the hosts for the final stages. Jonjo Shelvey looked to float a free-kick into the box, much to the disgust of his fans.
What did the Newcastle fans think of Shelvey?
“Couldn’t sleep last night from having nightmares of Jonjo Shelvey floating a cross to the edge of the box from a free-kick, to secure a draw against a side who were a man down with a centre back as goalkeeper instead of testing him with a shot. Turns out I wasn’t dreaming!” @Straker94
“Obviously. He’s one of the least intelligent footballers I’ve ever seen. He’d have shot at Ederson.” @costanza55
“I’d like nothing other than a public apology from Jonjo Shelvey for not shooting at an average centre-half standing in goal from a free-kick.” @rooney03
“The only person more embarrassing than the ref tonight was Jonjo Shelvey!” @HeraldOfNothing
“Omg! What was he doing? Get it into the box for God sake.” @palaceclaire
“Shelvey is the worst player in this team and has been for years, stealing a living and deserves nothing other than retirement” @geordieomalley
“Gutted. Should be more punishment for fouls like that. Award the goal or award a pen irregardless. He knows exactly what he’s doing. Shelvey wasting the free kick was criminal” @chelleandmaisie
“Shelvey is Garbage, The slowest in the team, The most unfit, the laziest, Worst tackler, link up play is terrible, He can pass a long ball that is it, He should never play for us again.” @dripbayless16
“Looks like we’re playing with 10 men then starting Shelvey” @ShaunIrving_
Regardless of his decision not to shoot at an outfield player in goal, it’s clear to see the Newcastle fans are far from impressed by what they have seen from Shelvey.
With key players such as Joe Williock watching on from the bench, the performance will certainly give whoever replaces Steve Bruce something to think about. As it stands that looks likely to be Eddie Howe. Contract talks are still taking place, but he watched on with Amanda Staveley at the Amex Stadium.
