Newcastle United have been on the hunt for a sporting director, or someone who can fill a similar role.

After appointing Eddie Howe, Amanda Staveley’s search has understandably turned to an authority figure who can help with key footballing decisions.

And, according to NUFC360 (via Eurosport), former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo is confident he can land the job to work above Howe for the Magpies.

Fans erupted at the news on Twitter, getting excited over his possible appointment. Getting the right appointment for this role will be key for the Toon if they are to survive this season and go on a charge next season and try and push the big boys.

How the Newcastle fans reacted over Emenalo update

“I would rather someone worked alongside him as opposed to above him, makes for a much better working relationship.” @youngroby19

“Whether this rumour is true who knows, it’s been a long link and the fact he was over in Saudi with the owners last week or something could have legs… Either way I feel it will be him/Campos – either one.” @Diamond8618

“Just shows, we aren’t stopping till we get that ‘perfect’ fit.” @Kevin80522517

“That would be a mega appointment, let’s goo!” @DavidTa41816701

“Yes please.” @Samtoon15

“Don’t get why you would come out and say this to the media if you’re in advanced negotiations and likely to get the job. Unless, like Emery, you’re using it as a tool to hawk yourself round and up your value. Not right to me.” @landing_d

While there’s nothing official as of yet, the noises coming from Emenalo himself are very positive for the Magpies. If he has indeed been over in Saudi Arabia to discuss the move, then that is a very good sign that a deal could be struck soon.

Whoever takes the role will have a huge job on, but one Emenalo will relish should he get the opportunity to become the Sporting Director.
