Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media on Friday ahead of his first match since being appointed earlier this month.

The Toon take on Thomas Frank’s Brentford on Saturday at St. James’ Park with Howe’s side looking for their first win of the season as they battle against the drop.

Will Shelvey thrive under Howe?

And speaking ahead of the clash on Tyneside, Howe spoke about Toon midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and how the Englishman has impressed him in training.

“I knew how good he was having played against him. But then when you work with him you realise he’s an incredible technician & can play all sorts of passes, long & short. In terms of our philosophy, he’s someone who’ll be very important to us,” said Howe.

Shelvey has now been with the Toon since 2016, however, it did not seem these fans were overly pleased to hear these comments from the 43-year-old head coach which were relayed on Twitter by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

What did these Newcastle fans have to say?

“Sack him”

“Oh no”
“Won’t please alot of people this mind…”
“Howe out.”
“not impressed with that like,”
“My goodwill is being tested here.”

The 29-year-old midfielder has had a tricky start to the 2021/22 campaign, making just four appearances in the Premier League following a calf injury sustained in the early stages of the season (via Transfermarkt).

These fans were clearly far from amused by Howe’s comments and it is not surprising given Shelvey has just 16 goals and 24 assists to his name in 176 appearances for the Magpies.
