Top players want to move to London or Manchester, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has warned Newcastle United.

Going forward, Newcastle are likely to be in the market for elite players following their recent takeover, which has made them the richest club in the world.

They have already been linked with a move for Real Madrid attacker Eden Hazard, with ESPN recently reporting that both the Magpies and former side Chelsea have been sounded out over their interest in signing the two-time Premier League winner.

Palmer, though, believes Newcastle are at a disadvantage compared to London and Manchester clubs when it comes to being able to attract top players and reckons they will have to spend silly money to get such deals done.

“The top players want to go to London or Manchester,” the ex-Leeds United star told TIF. “That’s where the top players want to go, so you’re going to have to pay silly money to get them to go to Newcastle.

“That’s what’s happened in the past with Alan Shearer, with Michael Owen, with Les Ferdinand, [Faustino] Asprilla, you’ve had to pay them ridiculous money to get them up there.”

One player Newcastle may be able to attract in January is Burnley’s James Tarkowski. According to The Telegraph, the defender is expected to be one of the new owners’ first signings.
