Plenty of Newcastle United fans have been left rather unhappy after hearing Lee Charnley is handling negations in the search for a new manager.

After Steve Bruce left the club, the Magpies have been on the hunt to find a suitable replacement. One name that stood out among the rest was Unai Emery.

However, as the former Arsenal manager is still in charge of Spanish side Villarreal, the transition to Tyneside was never going to be a simple process.

With that in mind, Newcastle supporters were dismayed to hear that (as per The Athletic) Charnley – who was managing director under Mike Ashley and evidently still holds a similar role now – was the man trying to sort a deal with Emery.

Emery has since committed his future to the Europa League champions, though the club were willing to pay Villarreal around €6 million (£5.1 million), in compensation for him.

Prior to the Spaniard’s refusal, the information was shared by NUFC 36o and it soon caught the eye of many distressed Magpies supporters.

Here’s what these Newcastle fans had to say…

“Explains it all.”

“Write it off now, lads.”
“No wonder we can’t get it over the line with this clown involved.”
“I mean it just goes from bad to worse! Why on earth would they have that man in charge of the filing never mind something as important!”
“CHARNELY IS STILL HERE???? I’ve had enough, Staveley out.”
“These lot are really starting their tenure with some embarrassing decisions honestly, why Lee Charnley is still there I don’t know…”

Judging from these comments, the club’s supporters may well feel that Charnley’s role in negotiations could have played a part in the breakdown in talks that followed.

With the Emery deal now dead, it’s hard to see Mike Ashley’s former managing director finding a way to redeem himself unless he can help bring in a really top-class appointment.
