Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins needs to cement his status as a top Premier League forward before moving to a club like Manchester City, says former midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Ex-Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips recently told The Sun that he would sign Watkins for his old club if he had the option.

City watched their legendary striker Sergio Aguero leave during the summer and did not replace him after failing to convince Tottenham to part ways with their star man Harry Kane.

Would you take Watkins at City?

It leaves City light in that No.9 department, but Palmer is not too sure if Watkins would be the answer to their current dilemma.

“I like him, I like him. I think he’s done really well for Aston Villa,” the ex-Leeds United player said to TIF. “I think he runs around, he’s very industrious, works hard for the team.

“But he’s just made the move from Brentford to Aston Villa in the Premier League. You need to cement that first, cement that first before going on to a club like Man City and then sitting on the bench or not play – it makes no sense.”

Watkins impressed in his debut Premier League campaign last term, scoring 14 goals in 37 appearances for Villa.

Another season like that and perhaps City or another club in the top six consider making a move for the 25-year-old in the near future.
