Liverpool journalist James Pearce has given an update on the injury situation surrounding midfielder Thiago Alcántara.

Having gone through their centre-back crisis last season when it came to injuries, it appears as though those problems have moved on to a different part of the pitch, with Liverpool now running low on players in midfield.

30-year-old Thiago was one of those players that have gone down with an injury, having suffered a problem with his calf in their game against Crystal Palace back in September. Things are looking slightly better for the Spaniard, with Jürgen Klopp confirming that “he would not rule him out” of playing before the next international break.

Do you know how many points Liverpool gain in these seasons? Let's start of with 2020/21

And speaking on the latest edition of The Red Agenda podcast, Pearce explained the situation surrounding Thiago’s injury, stating that he felt the club were just being very cautious when it came to giving him the go-ahead to get back to playing – but given their current situation, they might be forced to play him sooner than anticipated.

“The only kind of ray of light at the moment in terms of reinforcements is Thiago isn’t far away. Klopp said on Friday that he’d been back in full training on Thursday. But I think after a fair amount of time out, they’re being extra cautious there.

“And I know Klopp said he won’t be fully up to speed until after the international break, but you just wonder whether he will have to get some minutes this week because there isn’t too much left in the cupboard, midfield-wise.”

This is something that Liverpool have to be incredibly cautious with, because the last thing that they need is for him to be out for a longer spell of time.

Whilst he hasn’t had the greatest of impacts at Anfield from a goal contribution perspective – only bagging one goal and one assist in 35 appearances – with some stats also showing that they are better with him out of the team, at this stage, they might just need him as an extra body more than anything else.

Given the injury crisis at Liverpool, the last thing they need is to get desperate and try to shoehorn players into unnatural positions like when they moved Jordan Henderson to central defence last season. So if he does need to come in and play for them, it should be for the bare minimum rather than asking him to do anything strenuous or too demanding.
