Former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer thinks Rafael Benitez could be in trouble at Everton and has warned the Spaniard that he needs to bring European football to Goodison Park.

After a strong start to the season that saw them lose just once in their first seven games, Everton have really struggled of late.

They have taken just one point from their last four outings, losing three games on the trot before that 0-0 draw with Antonio Conte’s Tottenham.

Could Benitez be the next PL boss to go?

It has seen them drop to 11th in the table, and Palmer believes Benitez could be in trouble if things do not pick up soon.

“He’s going to be in trouble,” the ex-Leeds United player said to TIF when discussing all of the recent sackings in the Premier League. “I’ve heard several rumours about his salary. I’ve heard he’s probably the fourth or fifth-highest paid manager in the world of football.

“The stories are flitting between seven and 15 million a year, but even on seven million a year, that’s a lot of money. So he’s expected to deliver, I would think, the minimum of Europe.”

According to Independent.ie, Benitez is earning in the region of £15m a year, so the pressure really does look to be on for the former Liverpool boss.

Losing both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to injury, though, he probably does deserve a bit of leeway in this moment of time.
