Former Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo should have taken the Crystal Palace job when it was available, says journalist Tom Barclay.

Nuno, who was dismissed as Spurs boss earlier this month, seemingly came close to replacing Roy Hodgson in the Selhurst Park dugout in the summer.

The 47-year-old held talks with Palace over the position now held by Patrick Vieira and was on the verge of being appointed until negotiations collapsed over finances, according to Sky Sports.

Nuno, of course, went on to join a Big Six club in Tottenham. But given how things ended there, Barclay believes he was better off going to Palace.

“Although it doesn’t seem like he was a good fit at Spurs, for Palace, I thought that was a good option for them at the time,” The Sun journalist said to TIF. “Maybe on reflection he probably should have taken it.

It will now be interesting to see where the Portuguese coach ends up. As for Palace, they will be happy with the appointment of Vieira, who was able to trump Nuno when his side took on Tottenham earlier this season in that impressive 3-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Since then, the Frenchman has guided Palace to victories against Manchester City and Wolves, helping the Eagles climb to 10th in the Premier League table.
