Former Premier League football Carlton Palmer believes that Aston Villa have gone backwards following the sacking of Dean Smith.

Following Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton, which was their fifth successive loss in the Premier League this season [BBC Sport], owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens decided it was the right time for a change at the helm and parted ways with Smith.

Do you think that Villa have made the right decision in sacking Dean Smith?

After the departure of Smith, Palmer spoke to This is Futbol and said: “What would be a decent finish for Aston Villa? What were the owners realistically expecting Dean Smith to do this season? I think it’s a crazy sacking.

“Everything they’ve done and worked for for the last three or four seasons, it’s not gone out the window, but you’ve gone backwards as far as I’m concerned with getting rid of Dean.”

During his time in charge at Villa Park, Smith led the club out of the Championship and into the Premier League and after surviving by a point in their first season back in the top-flight, last term they had a good season finishing eleventh after accumulating 55 points.

Following Smith’s departure, Villa quickly started their search for a new man in the dugout and the club have since appointed Steven Gerrard who leaves Glasgow Rangers after guiding them to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade last season.
