Journalist Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest episode of Touchline Talk to discuss Aston Villa’s search for a new manager.

The Villa parted ways with ex-manager Dean Smith on Sunday after their fifth consecutive Premier League defeat against Southampton on Friday.

Would Gerrard be a good appointment for Villa?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Two names have emerged as candidates for vacancy in the dugout at Villa Park, with Steven Gerrard and Roberto Martinez both tipped as being on the shortlist.

However, both managers are currently working elsewhere, with Gerrard in the Scottish Premiership with Rangers and Martinez in charge of the Belgian national side.

Discussing his understanding on the club’s search to replace Smith, Jones had the following to say on what he had heard regarding their reported interest in Gerrard.

“I think there’s a chance.

“I think that Steven Gerrard has always seen Rangers as the perfect place for him to get this spell of management underway. And he’s had early success there, he’s learning every day, but ultimately, it was always going to be a platform to get a job in the Premier League. And I think Aston Villa is the perfect-size club for him to walk into.”

TIF Thoughts on Gerrard to Villa…

We think this is a move that would make a lot of sense for Gerrard given he has been so heavily linked with the potential managerial role at Liverpool in the future.

Working at Ibrox has been Gerrard’s first taste of managerial work and we think gaining some experience in the Premier League could prove highly beneficial for his potential hopes for the future.

Gerrard has already got his hands on the Scottish crown and the Gers currently sit top of the table, so there is no doubt he would be leaving a potential trophy on the table if he was to leave the current Scottish champions.

However, we have seen things like this in the past, with Brendan Rodgers leaving Celtic to join Leicester City, where the Northern Irishman has excelled since returning to the English top flight.
