Sunderland fans have been reacting to the performance of Dan Neil during their game against Lincoln City in the Papa John’s Trophy.

The Black Cats are, of course, the defending champions having won the competition last season, and finally got their campaign underway at LNER Stadium having initially been scheduled to take on Manchester United’s U21 side, only for that game to be rearranged due to international call-ups.

Cup competitions have been kind to Lee Johnson’s men this season, as they have already booked their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup following their victory over Wigan Athletic last month.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

The game was also very kind to young Dan Neil, who certainly left his mark on the game with the goal that he scored early on in the game with an impressive effort from outside the box.

However, it left many fans rather frustrated as they sent a clear message to manager Johnson about making sure he isn’t left out of the team again having started the last two games on the bench:

“Had him benched against Pompey hopefully he starts more”

“#BounceBackAbility”
“@LeeJohnsonCoach play him every single game, streets ahead of every midfielder we’ve got”
“He’s going to the top this fella, never drop him again”
“And Johnson left him on the bench on Saturday………. Baffling”
“Remind me why Dan Neil hasn’t played the last 2 games”
