A collection of Sunderland supporters have sung the praises of manager Lee Johnson after he gave an honest interview following the club’s recent loss.

In League One, the Black Cats fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Portsmouth. A rain-drenched outing saw Johnson’s men thoroughly beaten thanks to goals from Marcus Harness, Lee Brown and a double from John Marquis.

Despite the testing conditions, the Sunderland boss refused to make any excuses while speaking to the media after the game.

He apologised to the fans for the performance, giving them credit for their committed support, before saying: “We didn’t play the conditions well, it was clear, you know.

“They played the conditions much better than us, we got caught in their traps. Individuals were poor on the day.”

The interview was shared by the club’s official Twitter page and the fans quickly showed their appreciation for Johnson’s assessment of things.

What exactly did these Sunderland fans say?

“Good response from Johnson this.”

“Spot on for me, no excuses. Weather was the same for both teams and we didn’t adapt.”
“Honest reflection to be fair. Hopefully it’s a wake-up call.”
“I love this man.”
“Brilliant interview. On to the next.”
“Please never leave.”
“This has made feel a lot better”

Despite the loss, these fans seem to still be in relatively high spirits. With the Black Cats sitting alongside Wigan Athletic at the top of the league, only second due to goal difference, it makes sense for the club to have a sense of optimism around it at the moment – even after the significant defeat.
