Former Sheffield Wednesday player Carlton Palmer believes that Sam Hutchinson’s best position is as a holding midfield player.

As well as being able to play as a defensive midfielder, Hutchinson can also operate across the defence as a centre-back, right-back and left-back, offering the Owls plenty of versatility.

Alongside this, Hutchinson has also featured as a central midfielder and right midfielder but has played the majority of his career as a defensive midfielder, featuring in more than 140 games in that position.

Former Owls player Carlton Palmer believes that Hutchinson’s best position is as a holding midfielder, telling This is Futbol: “I think his best position is a holding midfield player. I know he can play at centre back but as a holding midfield player, you know he’s not blessed with great pace but he’s a very combative midfield player and he’s good in the air and you would think he’s comfortable at this level. He’s played a lot of games at Championship level.”

The 32-year-old is in his second spell with the Owls, after spending time with Pafos FC during the 2020/2021 campaign. As well as Pafos, Hutchinson has also had previous spells with Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Vitesse Arnhem.

After back-to-back draws against Shrewsbury Town and Ipswich Town, the Owls got back to winning ways in midweek, as they ran out 2-1 winners against Wigan Athletic.

And after getting relegated from the Championship last season, Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to put a good run of results together and mount a promotion challenge this term.
