Plenty of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to slam summer signing James McCarthy after his absence against Motherwell.

The boyhood Celtic fan was signed on a free transfer following his release from Crystal Palace over the summer, but the ex-Everton man has struggled to break into Celtic XIs under Ange Postecoglou.

Indeed, McCarthy was entirely absent from the matchday squad in Celtic’s 2-0 romping of Motherwell at Fir Park, prompting Celtic journalist John McGinlay to comment on his situation, having previously advocated for McCarthy.

The replies to his Tweet exemplified fan frustrations surrounding McCarthy and his place in the current Celtic squad.

What have some Celtic fans been saying in response?

“To make a second Duffy esque signing for the 2nd transfer window in a row is pretty mental. Still don’t believe Ange takes a player like McCarthy on. Polar opposite to his style and it shows.”

@BhoysAnalytics

“It’s got Dermot Desmond interference written all over it”

@Wieghorst98

“Unsure if he can walk at this point”

@CallumC92194886

“Can he even walk?”

@Cristoirb

“At least Duffy was only a loan…”

@misterglenbaker

“he’s never fit.”

@TheRyanMcGinlay

The Republic of Ireland international evidently has plenty left to do if he is to win over his doubters.

If he can’t fit in, an early exit could be on the cards, with one fan even suggesting Dermot Desmond could potentially step in.
