International football fans have been reacting to the performance of Callum McGregor during Scotland’s performance against Israel in World Cup Qualifying.

After six fixtures and ahead of the match against Israel, the Scots were seven points behind the Danes, one ahead of Israel and four ahead of Austria in Group F before the encounter at Hampden Park this evening.

After a crucial 1-0 win in Austria last month, Steve Clarke’s men sit in second place in the group behind runaway leaders Denmark, with a Qatar 2022 play-off spot in their own hands.

However, the Scots fell behind at home to a brilliant Eran Zahavi free-kick before Aston Villa’s John McGinn briefly levelled with a superb strike, only for Munas Dabbur to give the away side the advantage heading into the interval.

Despite this setback, QPR striker Lyndon Dykes managed to equalise for Scotland in the second half, atoning for his missed penalty in the first, before Manchester United’s Scott McTominay scored his first International goal in stoppage time to leave his side two wins from a play-off spot.

One player who, according to the fans watching at home, enjoyed a brilliant performance was Celtic captain Callum McGregor, receiving numerous plaudits for his performance following the match online:

What did fans make of McGregor’s performance?

“Billy Gilmour & Callum McGregor are the Scottish Xavi & Iniesta”

“Callum McGregor for me is the unsung hero, such a tidy player who makes it all tick”

“As is usual since the Euros every player will get mentioned for their efforts and one man will be forgotten, cos he just does what he does time and again… Callum McGregor easily Scotland MOTM”

@squire67

“Only want Scotland to win for Callum McGregor. Never loved someone so much”

@GrantDoyle77

“Gilmour and McGregor must be the best centre mid pairing Scotland have had in years. Absolutely superb. Gilmour was especially class. What a game”

@KRB_83

“You would take McGinn, McGregor and Gilmour over Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets”

With their own fate still in their own hands in Group F, Scotland fans will be hoping the Celtic midfielder can replicate this type of performance ahead of matches against the Faroes Islands and Moldova and help Steve Clarke’s side secure a play-off spot in their bid to reach the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
