Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield thinks that there has been a little bit of a disconnect between the Wolves academy and the first team.

Over the years, Wolves’ academy has produced the likes of Robbie Keane who went on to have a terrific professional career, playing for Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Inter Milan and LA Galaxy, and more recently Morgan Gibbs-White has transitioned from the academy, featuring 86 times for the first team. But Hatfield believes that there is a little bit of a disconnect between the academy and the senior squad presently.

“The important thing I think is for Wolves is to get a consistent conveyor belt of talent coming through because there has been a little bit of a disconnect. We’ve seen Gibbs-White come through, but he’s not really done the business for Wolves. He’s gone out on loan and he’s impressed but we’ve not really seen it enough for Wolves,” Hatfield told TIF.

Gibbs-White completed a loan move to Sheffield United on transfer deadline day with Wolves manager Bruno Lage telling the Express & Star he didn’t want him to leave Molineux: “I prefer him to stay but I need to respect the player and Morgan wants to play more. I respect, a lot, that ambition.”

During the summer window, Wolves made six signings with Hwang Hee-chan, Jose Sa, Rayan Ait-Nouri (permanent move), Yerson Mosquera, Louie Moulden and Francisco Trincao all putting pen-to-paper on deals with the club.

Wolves have been on a good run form recently as they are unbeaten in their last four Premier League matches, winning three and drawing one, and know that a victory in their next match against Everton will see them go above the Toffees in the league table.
