Ahead of the January transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Barcelona and France international forward Ousmane Dembele as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to strengthen his squad.

According to 9oMin, a move to Spurs could be on the cards for the World Cup winner amidst his contract standoff with Barcelona.

Newcastle United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund are also keen on the 24-year-old, with the France international out of contract at Barcelona at the end of the season and will become a free agent.

Dembele has had injury problems during his time at Barcelona so far and has not really made a huge impact at Camp Nou since his £135.5 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

The links linking the north London club to the winger has subsequently seen Spurs fans take to Twitter.

What did Spurs make of latest transfer update?

“On a free transfer this is 100% a no brainer. Still huge potential if can stay fit. Has shown end product in a quality league w Dortmund. Adds more pace options too. If we need to make non HG space sell Stevie or Lucas to do it. In fact sell both & replace w Dembele & Raphinha!”

“Yeah… Dembele and Bale next season will be fun”

“Spurs fan aswell. He’s a baller just a shame he’ll play like one game a season..”

@SpurssKai

“Really hope this ain’t true… If his body can’t deal with the rigors of La Liga he don’t stand a chance in the prem… Give me Coman instead”

@Kohzst

“I’d say 1000% take the risk, but it all depends on his mindset. If you get him ticking, you have a Ballon D’Or potential footballer. If not, waste of time. You never know until it happens, but you’d have to do your best to get a feeling from him/his people when meeting him etc”

@HB_HeadCoach

“Baller when fit but the issue is he can’t stay fit and is in massive wages. If he could regain form he’d be so good for us”

“See dont get me wrong he is a baller. But he is baller when he is on the pitch. He is really really really injury prone. Also his physique hasnt improved one bit since his BVB days. Man is also known to be quite arrogant. We cant have 2 Ndombeles at the same club.”

Barcelona are keen to extend Dembele’s deal, but it’s not proving easy for them to agree fresh terms given the club’s financial situation. The player would like a pay rise on his current agreement which is already worth in excess of £200,000-a-week, but Barcelona’s capability of matching his demands are under question.

The club would prefer Dembele takes a reduction in wages if choosing to extend, given their spiralling costs and massive debt, though there are a number of clubs from the continent – several in England’s top flight – who may be willing to offer the money he wants.

With Spurs already having Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Bryan Gil and Lucas Moura as their current attacking wide options, a move for the enigmatic French forward seems questionable.
However, given Dembele’s unquestionable talent and the potential to sign the Frenchman on a free, a move for the Barcelona forward could represent excellent business from Daniel Levy.
