Many Tottenham Hotspur fans have slammed Eric Dier over some recent quotes he gave when talking about the club’s ambitions.

According to the Mirror, the Englishman suggested that his side were too good for the Europa Conference League and they must aim a little higher.

His exact words were: “We need to be challenging for European football. There has to be European football in this stadium. With no disrespect to the Conference League, we need to be playing above that. That’s what we should be striving towards.”

The quotes were later shared on Twitter by Daily Hotspur, but his ambition was met with a fair bit of criticism by the Tottenham faithful.

What did these Tottenham fans say?

“Should try blocking a cross rather than leaving it for opponents to score, might help.”
“Would help if you weren’t starting every week.”
“Makes me laugh we think we are better than the Conference.”
“You’re the reason we’re in the conference league, Eric.”
“It’s because of players like you, Winks, Dele, Sanchez, Davies that we won’t be.”
“Does he realise that he’s the reason why we are there?”

Dier actually made a fairly strong start to the season, playing the full 90 minutes in each of the club’s three consecutive wins at the beginning of the campaign.

He was then injured during Spurs’ loss at Crystal Palace, a game that saw the side spiral into a poor run of form. Despite that injury, the £19.8m-rated defender has still started every league game for the club so far this season and is clearly trusted by new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Regardless of his own solid form, however, it seems as if these fans aren’t convinced by the quality of Dier and feel he is in some way responsible for the club’s inability to gain Champions League football over recent seasons.
