A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left angered after manager Nuno Espirito Santo described the upcoming Carabao Cup tie as ‘a final’.
Later this week, Spurs face Burnley in the round of 16. Despite the competition still being in the relatively early stages, the former Wolves man wanted to assert the importance of the fixture.
While speaking ahead of the game to the Evening Standard, he was quoted as saying: “The Carabao Cup is an important competition for us.
“We have to go game-by-game and this game is a final. It’s a chance for us to improve our game, to compete well knowing that we have to manage some situations.”
Will Spurs have a good cup run this season?
Yes
No
The quotes were later shared on social media by The Spurs Web, and it’s safe to say they did not go down particularly well with the Tottenham support.
What did these Spurs fans say?
“A final because we’re playing Burnley in the Carabao Cup? This man has low standards.”
Although these supporters clearly were not impressed by what their manager had to say, it would make some sense for them to get behind his point of view.
After all, the League Cup was the last piece of silverware Tottenham actually won – it came all the way back in 2009, thanks to a 2-1 against Chelsea.
The fans may well feel like the club should have higher standards than a midweek cup match against Burnley, but they surely wouldn’t turn their noses up at a trophy.
