Former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer is confident his old side will stick with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl this season.

Earlier this month, Football Insider reported that Southampton players expect Hasenhuttl to be relieved of his duties soon.

The Saints have not had the brightest of starts to the campaign, winning just one of their nine Premier League games so far.

The campaign prior was also not something to shout about for Southampton supporters. They finished that season in 15th and with the second worst defensive record in the division after conceding 68 goals in 38 games (via WhoScored).

Palmer, though, is not expecting the south coast club to make a change in the St Mary’s dugout. He exclusively told TIF:

“It’s about expectations. I mean, where do the board, where do the fans expect Southampton to finish in the league? That’s where the expectancy comes in. They finished 15th last season and I think they’re around that this year.

“I don’t think they can break into the top 10 if you look at what’s going to be available and what’s going to be around at the top 10. So I think as long as Ralph’s in and around there, I think his job is safe.”

While Southampton are not picking up wins just yet, there have been some positives this season.

Hasenhuttl will no doubt be pleased with how Armando Broja and Tino Livramento are performing following their moves from Chelsea, with both players scoring last weekend in the 2-2 draw against Burnley.
