Former Premier League player Carlton Palmer could see Eddie Howe as a future Southampton manager.

The 43-year-old has been without a job in management since departing AFC Bournemouth in 2020 and according to Football Insider, following the takeover of Newcastle United, Howe was one of the bookies early favourites for the post but instead is holding out for the Southampton job to become available.

When quizzed on if he could see Howe as a future Southampton manager, Palmer told This is Futbol: “Yeah, I was surprised to see Eddie not back in work at the moment. I know he is a student of the game, so he’s probably having a bit of time out going around to clubs abroad and at home and learning. That’s what good managers do.

“Mourinho did that when he came out, you look at how times have changed, you go and see how other managers operate, how other teams operate. Yeah, I mean I could see Eddie Howe easily as manager of Southampton for sure.”

During his time managing in the Premier League, Howe has taken charge of 190 matches, winning 56, drawing 43 and losing 91 and has picked up three Manager of the Month accolades in March 2017, January 2018 and October 2018.

In between his two spells on the south coast with Bournemouth, Howe also had a spell in charge of Burnley from the 2010/2011 season until the 2012/2013 campaign, taking charge of 86 matches for the Turf Moor outfit.

On his time with the Cherries, Howe received praise from Sir Alex Ferguson who told Ladbible TV: “On young mangers, Eddie Howe had a great period at Bournemouth, for a young manager. I think he did very well.”

Who cares what Carlton Palmer thinks – the most talentless player Saints ever signed. The guy was a compete waste of space and his knowledge of what goes on at Southampton behind the doors could be written on the back of a postage stamp.
