Former Southampton player Carlton Palmer believes that Celtic players fit the mould for the Saints after they were linked with Kyogo Furuhashi.

Calciomercato reported that Southampton had set their sights on Furuhashi who only joined Celtic Park during the summer but has been excellent so far for the Hoops.

Furuhashi signed for Celtic from J1-League side Vissel Kobe in the summer transfer window for an undisclosed fee according to BBC Sport and was very creative in the final third for his former side, as he scored 49 goals and registered 18 assists in 111 games.

Do you think Southampton should make a move for Furuhashi in January?

Ex-professional Palmer believes that Celtic players fit the mould for Southampton, telling This is Futbol: “Well you see Celtic players fit into the mould for Southampton with the salaries and the transfer fee. Nobody would have saw Virgil Van Dijk coming from Celtic to Southampton and going on to do what he has done and become the player he has done.

“I do believe that if you play for Celtic or Rangers, you could play in the top end of the Championship and in the Premier League. These are young players and so that’s where you’ve got to go when you haven’t got a big transfer budget, you can’t pay big wages that’s what you’ve got to look at clubs like Celtic and try and bring those players down and hope you end up with a gem like Van Dijk.”

Ralph Hasenhuttl looked to strengthen his side during the summer bringing in no fewer than seven players. Lyanco, Armando Broja, Theo Walcott, Tino Livramento, Romain Perraud, Dynel Simeu and Thierry Small all put pen to paper on deals at St Marys’.

Whilst there were incomings to Southampton this summer, the Saints also lost last season’s top goal scorer Danny Ings who joined fellow top flight side Aston Villa, but with the new signings you would imagine everybody connected with Southampton will be hoping for an improved finish on last season’s 15th-place league finish.
