Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has given his thoughts on Brendan Rodgers taking over at the club.

Despite having been in charge of the club for close to three weeks at this point, and with Steve Bruce having been relieved of his duties last week, the new owners at Newcastle United are still no closer to appointing a new manager at the club.

The Foxes boss Rodgers was one of the reported targets to take over from Bruce, and speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters (5:12), Kennedy claimed that the Northern Irishman would be the person he would choose to take on the job, and that there had been serious talks about going down that route, but that he didn’t think that is was likely to happen at this time:

“The one I would have picked as a builder would have been someone like Brendan Rodgers. But I just think that’s a really, look it’s my understanding that there have been conversations on that front, with regards to Brendan Rodgers, quite some way back down the line. But I just don’t believe it’s a deal that would get done.”

Would you like Brendan Rodgers as the next Newcastle manager?

No

Rodgers has made it known that he wasn’t interested in taking the Newcastle United job, but given what Newcastle can offer in terms of spending, as well as his history for jumping ship at clubs for better-looking opportunities, the idea of Rodgers making the move to Tyneside certainly shouldn’t have been totally ruled out.

And whilst a deal like this looks unlikely now as Kennedy hints at, that doesn’t mean that it should be ruled out as a possibility in the future. Given that the Newcastle United board are looking to win trophies, something that Rodgers has done both at Celtic and Leicester City, he certainly fits their profile.

And if Newcastle are able to reach a stage of success before Leicester City do, despite the head start that the Foxes have had over the past few years, then who’s to say that Kennedy won’t get his wish and that Rodgers will make the move after all.
