Newcastle United fans have been reacting to footage that has emerged of goalkeeper Mark Gillespie from the club’s Papa John’s Trophy game against Harrogate Town.

Goalkeepers were a big topic of discussion around the club during the early part of the season, with the number-one spot in the senior team being up for grabs between three experienced shot-stoppers in the form of Martin Dubravka, Freddie Woodman and Karl Darlow.

However, it was Gillespie that was the talking point on social media for his role in the Newcastle United U21 side’s 2-0 defeat to Harrogate Town on Tuesday night, with the hosts’ opening goal causing something of a commotion amongst the supporters online.

Footage posted by Sky Sports Football showed him making a rather poor error during an attempt at passing out from the back, which led to a number of interesting responses from fans on Twitter:

“Jesus wept our academy is absolutely shocking”

“He was poor all game.”
“So that’s why he’s only fourth choice keeper”
“Bin the lot”
“Oh dear Mark Gillespie having a nightmare in the trophy game last night!”
