Newcastle United fans have been reacting to comments made by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson in a recent interview he gave about the club.
It has been all change for Newcastle United in the past few weeks. Not only has the club changed hands when it comes to the ownership, but they’re also in the process of appointing a new manager following the departure of Steve Bruce, with assistant manager Graeme Jones taking charge on an interim basis.
However, that plan hasn’t gone down well with the Sky Sports pundit.
Speaking in a recent interview for SportsKeeda, Merson previewed their game against Chelsea this weekend but used it as an opportunity to criticise a number of things about the club, including their apparent lack of a plan when it came to the succession process following Bruce’s departure
“I worry for Newcastle. Nothing’s changed for them – they don’t have a manager, they’re in a relegation battle, and I don’t know what’s going on… It’s all right to come in with all this money, but you need to have a plan. They’ve sacked Steve Bruce and they’re going into tough Premier League games without a manager.”
These comments were relayed by local newspaper The Chronicle on their website and subsequently to social media, where there were plenty of fans on hand to rip into Merson for his view on things:
“Good. As usual his opinion means nothing to me. Had arsenal been bought over he’d be singing a different tune. Let him and Agbonlahor spout their nonsense. It just makes them less credible to anyone who actual has some common sense.”
Will Newcastle United win the Premier League in the next ten years?
Yes
No
Although you could make the argument that since they are about to head into their second Premier League game without a permanent manager in place, Merson might have a point when it comes to a lack of a plan.
