A number of Newcastle United fans have been left angered after Premier League clubs reportedly tried to block their club from new sponsorship.

As reported by Rob Harris for AP News, top-division English football clubs made moves to prevent the Magpies from striking lucrative sponsorship deals with companies linked to its new Saudi ownership.

The story explained that Premier League teams held an emergency meeting with the aim of putting an immediate freeze on any side being allowed to agree commercial arrangements with businesses with ties to their respective owners.

Both Newcastle and Manchester City resisted the move, but it passed with 18 votes in favour.

Harris shared details of the event on his Twitter account and it quickly caught the eye of many curious Magpies supporters.

Here’s what these Newcastle fans said…

“Anti-competitive, and I’m supposed to believe we’re the baddies, right Rob? These clubs are actively colluding to stop us progressing. Hopefully we see them in court…again, and win, again.”

“Rattled.”

“No one batted an eyelid when we have sponsorship deals with flannels, Sports direct, cruise etc!”

“There’s no way this is legal. This could get very entertaining.”
“Pathetic that other clubs can decide what sponsors to be allowed.”
“Eh hold on… Just look at Man City, Etihad airlines, isn’t that a giveaway?… Sour grapes again. Need to look at their own.”
“This would be an absolutely shocking admission of guilt and collusion. Cant see it staying. I can’t even fully believe what I’m reading tbh.”

With Newcastle hoping to embark on an ambitious new era, they likely won’t enjoy being confronted by such opposition from the division’s other members.

Of course, they already overcame a power struggle after the first takeover bid was not approved by the Premier League. Perhaps this new issue will go in the Magpies’ favour in the end, just as the last one did.
