Former Premier League player Dean Windass believes that Steve Bruce has done a fantastic job at Newcastle under the circumstances.
During the summer transfer window, Bruce spent just £25m on midfielder Joe Willock, with his only other acquisition the loan signing of Santiago Munoz from Santos Laguna.
Have you been impressed with Newcastle this season?
According to Deloitte Premier League clubs’ gross spend was £1.1bn this summer, with only Burnley, Wolves, Southampton, Watford and Everton spending less than the Magpies in the transfer window (via Sky Sports).
Windass was full of praise for Bruce, telling This is Futbol: “The job that he’s done under the circumstances financially, he’s done a fantastic job. The recruitment that he could bring in, you know he only brought in Willock.”
Bringing in Willock last season on loan massively helped Newcastle, as the 22-year-old scored eight goals in the second half of the campaign which helped steer the Magpies to a 12th place Premier League finish.
Last term’s finish in the league was one point and place better than the previous season, as in the 2019/2020 campaign, Bruce guided Newcastle to 13th place on 44 points.
