Former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has told This Is Futbol that he can see Newcastle United making a move for Everton manager Rafael Benitez.

Following the club’s recent takeover, Newcastle are thought to be keen on bringing in someone to replace Steve Bruce in the St James’ Park dugout.

Benitez was a popular figure during his own spell as Newcastle boss and has a very impressive CV after managing the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, where he won both the Champions League and Europa League.

Would you take Rafa back?

Bring him home!

It makes him a good candidate for any Premier League club. But given the Spaniard was only just appointed as Everton manager, it would be a shock if the Toffees allowed him to leave, especially after their strong start to the season.

Nevertheless, Palmer believes Newcastle may still try to bring Benitez back to St James’ Park.

“It’ll be interesting,” the ex-Leeds United star said to TIF. “I might throw my hat in the ring and say they might try and bring Rafa Benitez back.

“You know, the Geordies loved him there and he’s proven. They might try and bring Rafa back. Who knows?”

According to Sky Sports, Brendan Rodgers is a name that has been mentioned by the powers that be at Newcastle, but the 48-year-old is currently happy at Leicester City.
