A score of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to react to claims that Newcastle have joined some European heavyweights in the race for Argentine striker Mauro Icardi.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Newcastle are eyeing up the forward to compete with the likes of Callum Wilson and Joelinton – but could face competition for his signature from the likes of Juventus and Tottenham.
The links with the hitman comes following the completion of a consortium takeover spearheaded by PCP Capital Partners.
The change in ownership, that has seen the club part with Mike Ashley after a 14-year tenure, has led Newcastle to become one of the richest clubs in the world due to their backing by the Saudi-owned Public Investment Fund (PIF).

As a result, the comments made by consortium leader Amanda Staveley over Newcastle’s long-term ambitions under fresh ownership has fuelled speculation of heavy investment in world-leading talent – perhaps prompting the Icardi links.
Many Newcastle fans were quick to have their say on the links as a result.
What have some Newcastle fans been saying?
“Qatar’s PSG selling to Saudis Newcastle? Never going to happen! #NUFC”
“Icardi’s a great player but awful attitude… still, better back up to Wilson than Gayle, I suppose”
“Great how we are now linked with every player rated over 80 on FIFA22 #nufctakover”

“I feel so emotional reading this knowing they actually are our owners now, Rather than “ifs and buts””

Clearly, in amongst the humour is a tinge of cautious optimism among many Newcastle fans.
The club’s wealthy credentials offer hope for a ceiling to be smashed in terms of the club’s progress, and the Icardi links are largely being taken as a sign of ambition at the club.
