Football journalist George Caulkin has explained that Graeme Jones is  ’99 percent certain’ to keep the Newcastle United manager’s job until the end of the week, and could keep it for longer.

When Steve Bruce left the club by mutual consent, it led to the inevitable question: who will replace him?

Now, plenty of names have been linked – from Antonio Conte to Eddie Howe – but, as things stand, no permanent decision has been made.

Instead, Bruce’s former assistant manager was given the role on an interim basis and took the reigns against Crystal Palace over the past weekend.

Could Graeme Jones get the Newcastle job permanently?

While speaking on the Pod on the Tyne podcast, Caulkin has now offered an ‘update’ on the situation. He explained that Jones will have two games in charge, though he could ‘go on a bit longer’.

Caulkin said (25:15): “It’s not a very sort of glamorous update, but it is to say that, you know, Graeme Jones was told he has two games.

“I think [it’s] 99 percent certain that we will get to the end of this week, and there won’t be anybody in place. And it might, you know, even go on a bit longer than that.”

TIF thoughts on Graeme Jones and Newcastle…

Although they are still yet to win a game this season – and sit in the relation zone as a result – Jones did at least manage to guide his side to a much-needed point during his first game in charge.

Indeed, a trip to Selhurst Park saw a fantastic bicycle kick by Callum Wilson be enough to claim a draw after Christian Benteke had put the Eagles ahead.

It will be interesting to see how Jones fares against Chelsea this weekend – perhaps if he can pull off a surprise win, the club’s new owners may give him a shot at the job on a longer basis.
