Football journalist George Caulkin has revealed that while Newcastle United have held ‘conversations’ with Paulo Fonseca, the club are still looking for a new manager.

Ever since the Saudi-led takeover, rumours about who may be the Magpies new boss have been flying all over the internet. Steve Bruce was eventually fired, but no one has yet been hired as his permanent replacement.

However, Paulo Fonseca has seemingly emerged as one of the leading candidates to take the job –  he was said to have even been approached for the role in the summer by the club’s new owners (in anticipation of them taking over).

Despite this seemingly genuine interest, Caulkin has now revealed that despite a ‘couple of conversations’ he has been told that it won’t be Fonseca who takes charge.

Speaking on the Pod on the Tyne podcast, he said (25:51): “You asked about Fonseca, for example. We know that there’s been a couple of conversations, you know, face to face over zoom.”

Before concluding (26:11:)“I’ve been told that it won’t be Fonseca. I mean, I’ve been told that now a couple of times. But I’m not saying that as a definitive thing. But that is sort of what I’ve been told. And so they’re still looking.”

TIF thoughts on Paulo Fonseca and Newcastle…

With Newcastle stuck firmly in the relegation zone – three points off Leeds United who sit in 17th place – we feel the club really need to hire someone who can come in and make an immediate impact.

Having never managed in England before, it would be a somewhat risky appointment to put the Portuguese in charge of the club. Still, he has plenty of experience working in new leagues and countries.

Indeed, while his last job was in Italy with Roma, where he oversaw 101 games. He has also managed in Ukraine and Portugal.
