Football insider Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on his YouTube channel to discuss all things relating to Manchester United.

The transfer insider discussed the Red Devils’ plans for the upcoming January transfer window, with a number of players being linked with potential new deals.

Is a defensive midfielder what Man Utd need?

Yes

Yes

No

No

However, Romano discussed the club’s plans to bring in a new midfielder in the upcoming transfer window after having their summer plans disrupted by Cristiano Ronaldo’s availability.

Discussing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side’s plans for the upcoming January window, Romano had the following to say about their strategy for the upcoming windows:

“The final two points on the Manchester United strategy. One is regarding the situation of the midfielder. Manchester United are looking for a central midfielder [for] a long time, a defensive midfielder.

“They had in their list Eduardo Camavinga during the summer and same for Saul [Niguez]. They wanted both players, but then, when they had the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, [it] was impossible for Manchester United to say no.

“So in the next windows, let’s see if [in] January or during the summer, Manchester United will go for a midfielder.

“We will see what they will decide on [going for] new names – the possibility of trying for a player like Declan Rice was really complicated to sign in the last months; and Chelsea know about it, because Chelsea [also] have Declan Rice on their list, but it’s not easy to sign Declan Rice from West Ham – or if they will move on a new name.

‘So Manchester United are looking for a defensive midfielder and will be a key decision to take – which player is the best one to sign. Let’s see if [it happens] in January or [when it is] easier next summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

As Romano hinted towards, United have been linked with Declan Rice in the previous transfer window and we think this would be a great move for them to make.

However, we really struggle to see this deal getting done in a January window with big deals like this usually taking place over the summer with the selling club having more time to replace the player.

Although Romano believes a defensive midfielder was what the Red Devils were looking for in the summer, we think their fans will give them some leeway given they re-signed Ronaldo.
