Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester City were looking to sell Raheem Sterling in the past transfer market.

Towards the end of August, City became extremely interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, with the deal looking very probable at one stage.

Despite Ronaldo eventually ending up back at former side Manchester United, Romano has claimed that when City were still in the chase, they wanted to offload Sterling to make way for the Portuguese winger.

When talking as a guest on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube show, he explained the situation, saying: “When they were needing to sell one player to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, because they wanted to sign Cristiano, only in [the] case they sold one of their players like Bernardo [Silva].

“Then they were trying also with Raheem Sterling, to sell Raheem Sterling to some Spanish club.

“And Raheem Sterling knows about it. They were looking for options for him in [the] Spanish market, and it was impossible because Real Madrid were not interested in this kind of players in this moment, and Barcelona have no money to do this kind of deal.

“But I also expect Raheem Sterling to consider some other possibilities next summer if the situation will continue like this.”

TIF Thoughts on Raheem Sterling and Manchester City…

Of course, we all know Ronaldo ended up back with the Red Devils, where things have gone pretty well as he has claimed five goals in six games so far.

Will Raheem Sterling be a Man City player next season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Sterling, on the other hand, has not enjoyed a positive start to the new campaign in Manchester. The English winger has started in just two league games, claiming only one goal – the signing of Jack Grealish has seemingly made game time a little harder to come by.

Perhaps the English winger has lost some motivation after knowing he was expendable this summer. If his form doesn’t improve, it will be interesting to see if either player or club pushes for an exit in the January or summer transfer market.
