Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool were interested in signing Victor Osimhen before he joined Napoli.

Earlier this week, the Nigerian made headlines with a fine performance against Legia Warsaw in the Europa League. Not only did he come off the bench to grab a goal in the 3-0 win, but he also became just the second Napoli player (after Dries Mertens) to score in three straight European games in the 21st century.

In July 2020, Osimhen made the move from French team Lille to Serie A for a fee reported to be in the region of €81.3m (£68.3m).

However, while speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE, Romano claimed that Liverpool wanted to sign him, but some issues with the player’s agents made any deal too difficult to complete.

He said: “Many teams wanted him, yes. Also, Premier League – Liverpool were interested, then he had some problems with agents, he switched his agents like three times in three months.

“But then he joined Napoli and now he’s scoring a lot of goals. They paid around €60m for him, but I’m sure that he will be the next one after Lukaku and these kinds of strikers to go to top clubs.”

TIF Thoughts on Victor Osimhen and Liverpool…

Since moving to Napoli, Osimhen has turned into a key player at his new side. He got off to a great start to life in Italy, scoring six goals in his first two games during pre-season before his competitive debut last year.

This set the tone for the 22-year-old, who has already scored nine goals in 10 outings this season – he has also netted 19 times in 40 games in total for Napoli.

Still, with Liverpool’s front three clicking as well as they are right now, it’s hard to see where Osimhen would fit in. Perhaps one day in the future, though, he could be someone for the club to consider one more.
