Many Leeds United fans have been left stunned by the footage showing Dan James not being awarded a penalty against Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Whites did manage to seal all three points thanks to a first-half goal from Diego Llorente, but fans were up in arms over a video being shared on Twitter that appeared to indicate James was fouled inside the box.
Should Dan James have been awarded a penalty?
Neither the referee on the day, or VAR, however, chose to intervene, and Leeds fans were left absolutely perplexed by the apparent no-call.
How did Leeds United fans react to the VAR controversy vs Watford?
“Unbelievable how is that not a pen”
“If he has a red shirt on…”
“Gets worse the more I watch it”
“This is becoming a weekly feature of our games!”
“How on earth was that not given”
“On what planet isn’t that a penalty? What is the ref doing? VAR”
Given the kind of explosive pace and intensity that James plays at, these kind of calls and decisions are going to have to be made by referees.
The Welshman is as direct as they come, and will be causing opposition defenders all sorts of nightmares with his running, and is set to be a superb weapon for Bielsa.
Whether it’s by getting free-kicks or earning penalties, referees and VAR will have to be on point every single game involving Leeds, and any calls that are needed to be made.
Had Leeds not managed to win yesterday, and Watford had somehow come back into the game to either draw or win, then this contentious decision would surely be made much more of.
The fact the Whites won shouldn’t downplay it, or let referees off the hook for a potentially costly mistake.
