Leeds United needed to sign cover for Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, says former Whites midfielder David Norris.

The two were key figures for Leeds last season, with the former managing to score 17 goals in the Premier League and the latter featuring in 29 games.

On to this campaign, though, and the Yorkshire club have been without Bamford of late due to injury, while Phillips missed his side’s opener against Manchester United after a very long summer.

For Norris, his old club needed reinforcements for the two positions Bamford and Phillips play in, though he understands why Marcelo Bielsa may have had some trouble.

“Yeah, I think so. Those two positions are key,” the ex-Leeds player said to TIF when asked if the Whites needed to sign cover for Bamford and Phillips. “For the depth, obviously it’s hard because you’re going to have to bring someone in who might have to be a back up but be ready to go but still have that quality, so it’s always a difficult one.”

Leeds were at least able to strengthen out wide after signing long-term target Dan James from rivals Manchester United in a £25m deal on deadline day.

Bielsa will also be pleased with Junior Firpo’s arrival from Barcelona, with the 25-year-old giving him a natural left-back option.
