Marcelo Bielsa will be delighted if Leeds United can get Kalvin Phillips to sign a new contract, says former Whites midfielder Carlton Palmer.

According to Football Insider, Leeds have been in talks with Phillips over a new deal as they look to secure his long-term future at the club, something his agent has since confirmed to The Telegraph.

He was a very important player for his side last season, making 28 starts in the Premier League.

It makes it no surprise that Leeds want to hand Phillips a new contract and ward off any interest. And if the club manage to get the 25-year-old to put pen to paper on an extension, Palmer has no doubt that Bielsa will be delighted.

“I think Bielsa will be totally delighted,” the ex-Leeds star told TIF. “But also for Phillips, what players have to understand is yeah, of course, we’ve all got ambitions to play at the biggest clubs, we’ve all got ambitions to win trophies and do stuff like that.

“But he’s had the best year of his career in the Premier League and playing for England and the manager’s getting the best out of him. Why would you want to upset that apple cart? Get your contract signed and carry on doing what you’re doing.”

Phillips has been linked with a move to Manchester United, with the Daily Star claiming that the Red Devils have cooled their interest in Declan Rice and turned their attention to the Leeds player, so things could get interesting.
