Paul Merson has used his Daily Star column to criticise Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, claiming the side have ‘hit a brick wall’ under his management and that his ‘genius’ tag is vastly overstated.
Following on from their strong return to the English top-flight after a 16 year absence, finishing ninth in the league last campaign, Marcelo Bielsa’s side currently sit in 16th position in the table, taking just six points after seven games.
This has led to Paul Merson taking aim at the Argentine manager in his column, claiming opposition coaches have ‘become wise’ to his tactics and insisting his side need to make changes.
“I’ve never quite understood this ‘genius’ tag which some people attach to Marcelo Bielsa,” the former Arsenal player said.
“Don’t get me wrong, I do think he’s good and I totally respect the opinion of a top coach like Pep Guardiola who can’t praise the Leeds boss highly enough.
“But I just don’t get it. Just my opinion but a valid one nonetheless. I don’t buy into it. Leeds have hit a brick wall and he needs to change things around. The trouble is, I don’t think he’s got a change in him. Whatever the ‘B’ stands for in Plan B, it’s not Bielsa. He hasn’t got one.”
Following on Merson’s comments, Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the former Arsenal player’s comments.
What did these Leeds make of Paul Merson’s comments?
“This the same bloke that said Leeds would go down first season (finished 9th) and Ronaldo would struggle back in prem (first month back he’s just won player of the month). Yeah apologies if I take no notice whatsoever of what Merse thinks”
