Former Premier League striker Dean Windass believes that Steven Gerrard will want to finish his project at Rangers despite being linked with the Newcastle job.

Gerrard was named by the Times as a contender to replace Steve Bruce in the St James’ Park dugout. Roberto Martinez and Unai Emery are also said to be possible candidates for the job.

After guiding Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade having gone the entire campaign undefeated, Windass believes that Gerrard will want to finish the project at Ibrox before moving on.

“I think Steven obviously will be the next Liverpool manager. Listen we’ve always spoken about Glasgow Rangers winning the league last year with no supporters, it will be harder this year with the supporters because obviously there’s more pressure. So, I think Steven will want to finish that project, I think he’ll want to win the league in front of the fifty thousand supporters at Ibrox,” Windass told TIF.

Despite the speculation linking Gerrard with the Newcastle job, the former Liverpool midfielder told BBC Sport“I’m in a very big job, a very big role, which I’m very much focused on.”

After winning his first managerial honour last term, Gerrard also picked up a personal accolade as he was named the Scottish Premiership Manager of the Year for the same campaign, which goes with his plethora of trophies he won during his playing career.
