Former Premier League footballer Carlton Palmer believes that Newcastle United will splash the cash in the January transfer window.

Following the takeover of the football club from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Telegraph reported that the Magpies could spend as much as £190m in January without falling foul of Finance Fair Play rules.

During the summer transfer window, the club spent £25m on Joe Willock and also brought Santiago Munoz in on loan according to Sky Sports but Palmer believes that the new owners will spend big in January.

“I think they will, I think they’ll splash out big. I mean they’re down at the bottom of the league. The one thing this consortium can’t have, won’t have, is them getting relegated.

“I don’t believe it will happen. I didn’t think it would happen last season when everybody was saying they would go down. I didn’t believe it would happen and I don’t believe it will happen this season, but I think they will splash the cash, but it depends.

“When you’re saying two hundred million and they’re going to go after top players, you’re looking at Harry Kane now, you’re wanting one hundred and thirty million, Grealish is one hundred million. One hundred and ninety million in this day and age is not a lot of money. You look at what Arsenal have just spent in bringing in three or four players,” Palmer told This is Futbol.

Since returning to the Premier League in the 2017/2018 campaign, Newcastle have finished tenth, thirteenth twice and then last season twelfth in the league standings.

The new owners are aiming high though, as Amanda Staveley set out their ambitions when speaking to Sky Sports, saying: “Newcastle United deserves to be top of the Premier League. We want to get there. It will take time, but we will get there.”

After the takeover there were joyous scenes outside St James’ Park with fans celebrating the new era at their football club [BBC News].
