Dan Cook has been speaking on the HLTCO podcast about Crystal Palace’s chances of keeping Conor Gallagher once his loan deal expires.

During the summer transfer window, the Eagles managed to beat off stiff competition from Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa to the loan signing of Gallagher – and it’s proved to be a stellar and smart piece of business, with the midfielder featuring in every game apart from parent club Chelsea, managing to return two goals and one assist.

Despite it only being October and the Premier League season only into its eighth week, Gallagher’s future beyond his loan deal with Palace is under discussion, with journalist Tom Barclay claiming that Newcastle held an interest in the summer.

Barclay also cast doubt over whether Palace would be prepared to pay a premium fee following his spell at Selhurst Park, backing Chelsea to demand at least £30m for his services if they decide to let him go.

As a result, Cook is not confident about seeing Gallagher remain at Crystal Palace.

“Conor Gallagher is someone that has been in the news and the headlines in relation to Crystal Palace and his own personal future a hell of a lot given the fact that we’re still in mid-October, and I think it speaks to the quality of his performances in the early stages of his loan spell in SE25 that he’s made such an impression.

“It seems as though, with a long-term Chelsea contract to his name, we will struggle to get him back on a permanent basis after this particular loan spell finishes; it sounds ridiculous given the fact that we’re only in the infancy, really, of his loan term.

“I mean, in terms of his England Under-21 performances, his goal return for Crystal Palace, the energy and dynamism that he’s offered in the middle of the park, Tom Barclay – a journalist, I believe for The Sun, unfortunately – has already said that he believes he will go for say £30m or £40m in the summer window, if indeed Chelsea decide to let him leave at all.”

TIF Thoughts on Gallagher…

It would certainly be a huge ask for Palace to splash out £40 million on one player given that their record signing is currently Christian Benteke, who cost them £28 million during the 2016/17 season when he arrived from Liverpool, so it may be a short-lived experience for Palace fans who are enjoying watching Gallagher.

Crystal Palace fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Palace 19/20 season quiz. We'll start off with an easy one... Which side did Palace face on the opening day of the 19/20 Premier League season?

Gallagher is into only his second season as a Premier League regular having spent last season on loan at West Brom.

Although he was not able to help them fend off relegation, he clearly impressed enough to draw interest from Leeds and Palace, and now he’s being linked with a move to newly taken-over Newcastle United – who may have the cash to tempt Chelsea into selling – it appears his stock will only continue to rise.
