Ex-professional footballer Carlton Palmer believes that Timo Werner will get game time at Chelsea.

The Champions League winners bolstered their strike force this summer as they brought Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge and so there is further competition for places in Thomas Tuchel’s team.

Werner signed a five-year deal with Chelsea in the summer of 2020, joining the Blues from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig and scored 12 goals and provided a further fifteen in all competitions last season.

Should Werner be a starter?

Palmer doesn’t believe Werner needs to be concerned about game time this season at Chelsea, telling This is Futbol: “No, you’re not concerned and I’m assuming they are going to go all fronts. They want to win the Champions League, they want to win the league.

“You’re going to have players during the physicality of the Premier League who are going to play internationals. They can’t play week in, week out, they just physically won’t be able to do it, so those players will get game time.”

Werner has also operated out wide as a winger during his career and so could play as part of a front three out wide for Chelsea this season. For Gianfranco Zola, who has praised him for doing the “dirty work” when he plays, the German is the reason why Tuchel’s men are European champions.

After coming in part way through the season last campaign and winning the Champions League, Tuchel has looked to strengthen his squad this summer to allow Chelsea to compete in all competitions, as alongside bringing Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge, the Blues also signed midfielder Saul Niguez and also goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
