Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer does not believe that Anthony Martial moving to Arsenal from Manchester United would be a downgrade for the Frenchman.

The forward has struggled for minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thus far this season.

Martial has made a total of two starts in all competitions prior to the weekend, against Southampton in the Premier League and West Ham United in the EFL Cup.

Do you think Man United should sell Martial?

The Frenchman has been an unused substitute on three occasions recently, against Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday and against both West Ham United and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Eurosport has reported that the forward has been told he can find a new club in the January transfer window but it may be difficult to find a buyer for him given his wage demands.

Martial earns nearly £250,000-per-week at the club and United want around £40m to allow him to leave, and Palmer believes that a move to Arsenal could fit him, provided United allow it.

He said: “It all depends how you see a downgrade. Everyone had Mikel Arteta sacked after the first three weeks of the season, now he’s won three on the bounce. Arsenal are a massive club so it’s not a downgrade to go to Arsenal.

“People are thinking and saying ‘well, are Arsenal going to challenge for the league title?’ No. But I think what they’ve done in terms of revamping the squad, reducing the age of the squad, they’re building for the future.

“Anthony Martial is still a young player so if he isn’t getting game time at Manchester United, then of course that becomes an option. But do you sell somebody like Anthony Martial, who’s a very talented player, to your competitor? Very unlikely.”
