Troy Deeney would have been a great acquisition for West Brom, claims former Baggies midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The 33-year-old left Watford for Birmingham City in the summer but could have been at West Brom had things panned out differently last year.

In an interview with The Athletic, Deeney revealed just how close he came to joining the Baggies back in 2020, telling the outlet that he had met former manager Slaven Bilic and had even been assigned a shirt number.

For whatever reason, though, a move broke down and West Brom turned to Karlan Grant in their bid to improve the team’s attack.

On that failed move, Palmer told TIF:

“Troy Deeney is a handful for any Premier League or Championship defender, certainly in the Championship.

“It’s interesting that he said he had talks with Slaven. It would’ve been a great acquisition for the football club, for sure.”

Deeney has a decent goalscoring record in the Premier League, with a few campaigns where he was able to hit double figures under his belt.

Bearing that in mind, it is not hard to see why Bilic targeted the former Watford striker before eventually signing Grant from Huddersfield Town in a £15m deal.
