A number of Sunderland fans have expressed their satisfaction online after the club announced that Denver Hume had signed a new contract.
The club’s official website shared the news, explaining that left-back has agreed to a new two-year deal with The Black Cats; while the option of adding a further year is also included in the contract.
The fact that Hume agreed to stay on Wearside may have surprised a few, as reports over the summer suggested that the defender had refused an initial contract offer with Sunderland.
However, evidently, this new deal was amicable to all parties and when the news was shared on Twitter, a collection of the club’s faithful had plenty to say on the matter.
Here’s what these Sunderland fans said
“Good news, that’s left-back position with ample cover now.”
“Haway man!!! The whys and wherefores as well as conspiracy theories are irrelevant. The kid has signed, are we better with or without him? Better I would suggest but more importantly, LJ wants him. It’s good, it’s done let’s move on!! The club is on the up!!”
Will Sunderland return to the Championship this season?
It would have been easy for these fans to criticise Hume after he initially did not seem to want to sign a contract at the club. However, judging from their comments, they are relatively content to have him remain in the North East.
The 23-year-old has spent his whole career with the Black Cats, featuring 73 times for the senior side. Perhaps that is why these supporters are able to show him some sympathy and plenty of support.
